Always held on the third weekend of July, the Honor the Earth Pow-wow is attended every year by nearly 10,000 people from the U.S., Canada, and other countries. The story of Honor The Earth is basically one of people standing up for their rights, and a humbling beginning by a small number of LCO people who wanted a better future for their tribe and people. We must not forget the many sacrifices that were made on our behalf by our relatives before us. We must give thanks for our many blessings and show honor and respect to our Mother Earth, not just today but throughout our lifetime. Traditional Native American music, dancing, crafts and food create an authentic tribal experience and are enjoyed by thousands of people each year who join each other in celebration as their relatives did for hundreds of years previously.

Each year in mid-September, thousands of fat tired fliers descend on the towns of Cable and Hayward in northwestern Wisconsin to take on the off-road bicycle tests of endurance and agility offered during the Chequamegon Fat Tire Festival weekend. Since its inception in 1983, the Chequamegon Fat Tire Festival has built a popularity and reputation that is unmatched in the sport today. From the 27 hardy cyclists who lined up to challenge the unknown trails of the Chequamegon in the first year, to the sold out limited field of 2,500 who are chosen by a random lottery, the Festival has earned the title of the "Nation's Most Popular Off Road Bicycle Adventure." Not many people realize the number one killer for women is heart disease. Go Red for Women was created to help women combat and prevent the disease. The campaign not only shows women how to make healthier nutrition choices, but also educates women on symptoms that are often related to heart disease. Go Red for Women has become a national and international campaign that has gained momentum as more and more women are diagnosed.

red-gala-1One way that Go Red for Women raises awareness about heart disease is through the education of symptoms. These characteristics of heart disease can vary in terms of what age they affect women and their health. The main risk factors, however, typically apply to most women who have heart disease. These factors include being overweight, not being physically active, smoking, having diabetes, using alcohol excessively and having a family history of heart disease. High blood pressure and high cholesterol are also health issues that can lead to the development of heart disease.

    red-gala-3

The Go Red for Women campaign in Hayward wants to inspire women to take control of their health and future now through local support and events to raise awareness.

The Hayward Area Chamber of Commerce invites you to the Red Dress Gala, where not only will we raise funds for the American Heart Association for Go Red for Women, we will honor six outstanding women in the Hayward area. Click on the link below to nominate the woman you believe to be an outstanding individual in her field.

Race Updates: Due to inclement weather the start of the Hayward Lions Club Pre-Birkie has been moved to 11:00a.m. The race this year will Start and Finish at OO in efforts to conserve snow on the southern part of the trail.

This Lions Club Fundraiser and FUN race has no equal when it comes to preparing one mentally and physically for the American Birkebeiner. In other words, once you have completed the Pre-Birkie you will have the confidence to take on the mother of all XC marathon races, the American Birkebeiner.

And, if 26 Kms of those beautiful hills were not enough, …back by popular demand are the 42Km skate/classic races. There are four food stations on the 26km course and six on the 42km course, which are manned by local youth groups who are eager to serve you along your way to the finish at OO. There you’ll find refreshments and our famous doughnuts.

Every skier will receive a special Pre-Birkie sweatshirt and all skiers who pre-register prior to Jan 15 will get their sweatshirt at the spaghetti feed/late registration or on race day late registration at the VFW. CANCELLED FOR 2020

After exploring various options and considering a number of factors, our Hayward Area Chamber of Commerce has made the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 Musky Festival due to the uncertainties associated with the current pandemic and the gathering of large groups. The health, safety and well-being of the Hayward area community, festival attendees, participants, sponsors, volunteers and staff have remained our top priorities as we have monitored the COVID-19 situation.

While we are saddened by this news, it has also reminded us how extremely fortunate we are to live in an area that offers an abundance of options to enjoy, even in the incredible times we find our world in. Shopping within our small businesses can be done safely and our local restaurant take-out options are endless. Taking the boat out on the lake and breathing in the pure Northwoods air is still as refreshing as it gets. Exploring our abundant trail systems is social distancing at its best – and way, way before the term was en vogue. The fact of the matter is, it’s being proven that our Northwoods life is as resilient as they come and for that, we are grateful.

Even with uncertainty in the world, we know how determined our community is to move ahead to make the very best of the days, weeks and months to come, and that is absolutely what is going to happen. It will simply not include large festivals for the time being. We look forward to coming together for next year’s 71st Musky Festival scheduled for June 25-27, 2021. In the meantime, we know that all will find ways to safely enjoy our beautiful ‘Neck’ of the Woods as we lift one another up!
